Birth Trauma Therapy in NJ and NYC

What Is Birth Trauma?

Birth trauma isn’t defined by what happened on paper or how others perceive it; it’s about how the experience felt to you. Maybe you're still dealing with pain or a difficult recovery, or maybe your baby had to stay in the NICU.  Even if you're physically okay and your baby is healthy, you can grieve

or be angry, sad, or confused about what you went through.

If your birth felt overwhelming, out of control, or unsafe, or like it was "happening to you" that matters.

Birth trauma can stem from:

  • Emergency C-sections or unexpected medical interventions

  • Feeling dismissed, unheard, or unsupported during labor

  • The birthing experience being very different than you imagined or planned for

  • Fear for your baby’s safety

  • Physical pain, complications, or injury

  • Past trauma that was triggered during the experience

Even when everything is considered “medically fine,” the emotional impact can still be significant.

You might notice flashbacks, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or difficulty feeling connected to your baby. These are common responses to trauma—not signs of weakness.

How Birth Trauma Can Show Up

Birth trauma often affects both your emotional and physical experience.

You might feel:

  • Guilt, sadness, or a sense of disconnection

  • Fear of future pregnancies

  • Misunderstood by your partner, family and friends

  • Unsure why you can’t “just move on,” continuously replaying your birth

  • On edge, anxious, or easily triggered

  • Overwhelmed by reminders of the birth or medical settings

I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain process and integrate traumatic experiences so they no longer feel as overwhelming. Rather than reliving the experience, EMDR helps your brain store it in a way that feels resolved instead of raw.

EMDR Can Help You
  • Reduce distress connected to the birth experience

  • Process feelings of fear, shame, or guilt

  • Feel more connected to your body and your baby

  • Regain a sense of safety and emotional steadiness

This work is never rushed. My goal is for you to feel supported, grounded, and in control throughout the process. You don’t have to minimize what happened or carry it on your own.
